Carolynn Bruton, Founder of IT at Home
I began IT AT HOME because I love teaching.
I retired from Springfield Convent Junior School in 2011 after 18 years in the Junior School where I taught computers in a cross-curricular manner. Springfield has a 30-user computer room and all the girls in the Junior school spend between 30 to 60 minutes in the room each week. I was also the webmaster in the Junior School for a number of years where my students published many international projects online. Prior to teaching, in Cape Town I was the IT teacher at Kingswood College Junior School in Grahamstown where the school had 30 Apple Macintosh computers. I taught at Kingswood for over 20 years, though only as the computer teacher for the last 8 years.
I have a fascination for new technology and have attended and given presentations at conferences and workshops in South Africa and the USA, where I was the recipient of an Inspired Teacher scholarship as a result of my use of visual learning and graphic organisers.
Since retiring I have continued my love of new technology and enjoy the Windows 8 environment on my Dell laptop. I have experimented with many new apps on my iPad and regularly attend workshops and give presentations on the use of new apps at conferences and workshops.
IT AT HOME is geared for the individual who would like personal one-on-one training, preferably on their own computer, although we do have access to Macbooks, iPads and PC laptops if clients have a desk-bound PC which they can’t bring to the lesson.
My objective is to allow my clients to grow in their personal and technical space, in their own time and at their own pace, while exposing them to new and challenging ideas and techniques. I hope in the future to create a permanent niche for this kind of teaching as it is extremely satisfying to see my clients grow in technical expertise, having empowered themselves to become independent in so many ways.
I look forward to continuing my teaching in an environment where the individual matters.
